Wabi is a term belonging to the Japanese tradition that means discreet, modest, tasteful. In this work, the intention is to reflect the oriental spirit of Japanese music. This fidelity is not intended to be syntactically correct, but rather to hint, more or less directly, at the feeling generated by this music, subtle in its forms and diaphanous in its expression. In Wabi the silences are as important as the music.
THE INTERPRETATION
The metronomic indication is indicative and should in no case be interpreted literally. Those notes, whether long or short, pauses or ornamentations, can be interpreted by the performers in an open way. Naturally, openness should not mean lack of internal rhythm or slackness, but simply that they should be considered more in terms of their internal rhythm, prosody, accents and nuances, than in terms of strict fidelity to Tempo. In a way, the possibility of a rubato maintained throughout the piece should be considered, but without exaggeration, subtly. In short, the metronomic indication is indicative and should be adjusted more or less according to the performers' preference. The important thing is the rhythm and not the time signature. The small notational figures (one or several depending on the case) which precede the real notes (life-size) must be played quickly and with a slight effort. The dynamic indications must be scrupulously respected and care must be taken to find a poetic background to the musical discourse. This work was written during the last quarter of 2005 in the city of Barcelona.
