In Vals banal (Banal waltz) the title of the work gives a clear indication of its content, based on Mallarmé’s saying “jouir comme la foule du mythe inclus dans la banalité”. This is achieved by means of nothing more than a minimal melodic structure, which is as banal as a silly Disney symphony, taking pleasure in its own banality through a banally academic development. Its basic principle is to enjoy a myth (the dazzling 19th-century waltz, with its merry widows, its bats flying over dirty danubes and play that waltz Pepita, that’s what I want …) in the full extent of its banality, to the point that it meets with one of Brahms’s most popular waltzes.

Vals banal was first performed by Miguel Zanetti and Fernando Turina, at UNESCO’s Headquarters in Paris on 12 March 1986. It was then recorded in 1992 by the same performers on the CD “Música española contemporánea para piano a cuatro manos” (Contemporary Spanish piano music for four hands), which was produced by Radio Televisión Española (65023).
