This selection of Scott Joplin's Rag Times is intended as a tool for teachers working with elementary piano students in grades two through four. It is a tool designed to achieve two objectives. On the one hand, to give a touch of colour and rhythm to the repertoire of the students, who will have a good time, as they will see that with a not too high difficulty they will extract, with the help of the teacher, an excellent and new sonority of the instrument. The second objective, which is more technical, is to offer the possibility of working on rhythmic rigour, accuracy and counterpoint, since the nature of Rag Time is extremely rhythmic. This, combined with the fact that the teacher is the most suitable accompanist for most of the Rag Times, will naturally lead the student to be precise and demanding of himself in his playing.
The Rag Times in this volume are arranged in order of difficulty, the first ones corresponding to the student and the second ones to the teacher or to an advanced student. The order of appearance is therefore given by the difficulty of the first ones. The last Rag Time is the well-known The Entertainer, adapted for 6-hand piano. Its difficulty is somewhat higher, since there are no longer only two musicians to square off, but three. Even so, its level is still within the Elementary Grade, and I think it is worth the effort of putting it together, since both the festive tone and, I hope, the strength and dynamism of the original will be guaranteed.
