THE MATERIALS HAVE TO BE HIRED
Matí de festa a Puiggraciós [The Morning of the Fiesta in Puiggraciós] was the first orchestral work composed by Manuel Blancafort. It was written in one movement, approximately 12 minutes long, and was premiered on March 11, 1929 by the Orquesta del Liceu directed by Joan Lamote de Grignon, as part of a festival of national works including compositions by Albéniz, Pedrell, Samper, Ricard Lamote, Manuel Palau and Falla.
In 1930 the Pau Casals Orchestra perfomed the work in the Palau de la Música Catalana. It was later performed in other cities such as Paris, Milan and Amsterdam. It was also performed in Rotterdam on January 27, 1934 by the Rotterdam Philharmonic directed by Edward Filpse.
From the first the work was well regarded. Writing in Las Noticias Jaume Pahissa commented: «A young composer who in this work demonstrates his knowledge of orchestration, ease with orchestral development, modern harmonies and imagination in the symphonic development of the themes».
Jaume Pahissa also wrote the Program Notes for the Premiere in which he explained that the work was inspired by a chapter titled «La festa de les roses» [The Rose Festival] in the novel Solitud [Solitude] by Víctor Català. Blancafort said that he had mentally placed himself in a hermitage in his town and that he wanted the piece to be a dialogue between Nature and his sprit. In the manuscript the work is dedicated «Als meus pares» [To my Parents] and is subtitled «Quadres simfònics» [Symphonic Scenes].
Originally the work was conceived as part of a more extensive composition, however, in the end it is a one movement symphonic poem. The score was first published by Edward Flipse, Rotterdam and Sénart-Salabert in 1929. This edition is by Editorial de Música Boileau.
