Many times I have thought that I began to play the piano by chance since I could have chosen another instrument had the circumstances which lead me to music had been different.

Often I envy the expressivity of other instruments, especially bowed string instruments, the clear colours of the winds, the warmth of the guitar and the hypnotic power of the voice. However, in spite of all this, the piano has given me much, especially because of its musically neutrality. There is no other instrument with such an extensive repertoire, both solo and ensemble works, which range from intimate works to magnificent historically important masterpieces.

Thanks to the piano I decided to write Gevurah, which is a declaration of love for the piano.

This work began to take shape through a phrase of Stendhal which appears at the beginning of the score: «I love force, but the force that I love so much is the same for either an elephant or an ant». For me this phrase sums up the characteristics of the piano, an instrument created to control volume and, due to its immediacy, perfectly connects the gestures of playing it with the result obtained.

Gevurah, a Hebrew word meaning «force», «justice», and «severity», evokes the boundaries of this energy. This is a very physical piece, deliberately only slightly intellectual, without being aggressive and with many passages in which the performer shines. For this reason there are certain cadenza-like moments as well as others which although they are more lyrical are also technically complex.

It is dedicated to my dear Maria Molet, one of the finest pianists that I know.
