It was written as a tone poem: a composition for symphony orchestra that has its origin in an extra-musical element. The symphonic poems of Franz Liszt, the first to introduce this type of work, or those of Richard Strauss, come from literature (Prometheus, Hamlet, Orpheus, Don Juan or Don Quixote).
In this case, the music follows the film starring Keaton, although this in turn was also based on the book Audacity and Suffering: A History of the Great Railway Adventure by William Pittenger (1894). The publication recounts an account of an episode that took place in 1862, during the American Civil War.
Although Voronkov’s composition cannot be used to accompany the projection as a soundtrack would, it does attempt to provoke the feelings and emotions experienced by the film’s protagonists. The movement titles help to associate the music with specific moments in this extraordinary comedy, as well as to follow the adventures of Johnnie Gray and Annabelle Lee in this epic war story.
