Enric Casals had been thinking about a cello Concerto for his daughter since the beginning of 1946. For some time he had been metalizing the general form of the work (themes, divertimenti, modulations, solos, tuttis, etc.) but the real work of composition began and continued during the summer of that year at his beach home in San Salvador. The work, including the orchestration, was completed by the end of the following year. Generally, while composing Enrique Casals tended to orchestrate at the same time. When the work was completed he made only slight changes which would not substantially affect the completed work.

We have provided these details not merely as an anecdote but rather with the goal of situating the work in the appropriate context or “climate”. It is in this sense that we mention the location where the work was composed, the beach of San Salvador. There the composer was influenced by the proximity of the sea during the creation of the Concierto. This fact gives us a strong sense of the spiritual nature of Catalunya. Enrique Casals composed music which seems to spring forth directly from our land. As a sincere artist, this is a direct result of always being faithful to his innermost thoughts.

In this work Enrique Casals wrote a true Concerto in the most rigorous sense of the word. By this we mean that he followed the traditional form of a genre which is just as important today as it has been in the past. Since the work perfectly follows the historic concerto form we will not comment on its formal structure especially since the analysis of its extraordinary qualities would greatly exceed the limits of a brief commentary.

Given the brevity of these notes, it is more appropriate to highlight the extremely expressive character of the Concerto due to the composer’s sincerity which we commented earlier. It is music which is intimately tied to the personal experiences of the composer adn which is vital, sincerely expressive, and reflects the manner in which Enrique Casals embodies the artist who is scrupulously faithful to the intrinsic aspects of music as an art.

In closing, we want to comment that the composer´s preoccupation with formal structure is extremely important in the «Allegro moderato» in which the thematic material is carefully worked out. In the «Adagio doloroso» the highly expressive music is filled with painful accents. This is followed by the final rondo «Finale (Tempo of a Sardana», whose free expressivity provides a relief for the listener.

As in the first movement, the final movement maintains the composer´s preoccupation with formal structure. It also has the rhythmic figures which are typical of a sardana. These rhythmic figures are not intrinsic to the composer´s thinking, which is always original, but rather are related to the coincidence that occurs when a sincere musician finds his path in the rhythms that are part of his country.

The Concerto being premiered today reflects the vast experience of the composer throughout his career as a teacher, violinist, orchestral conductor and composer. We do not need to comment on any of these activities since he is so well known in our musical world. This premiere performance will be performed by the eminent cellist Pilar Casals, who is the ideal person to present to us with the utmost fidelity the artistic message of the composer in this work.
