This book is designed to be used during the 4 elementary level courses of our Conservatories and Music Schools. After almost 20 years of teaching children and adults to play the contrabass, I have decided to make a book with children in mind. Normally, to teach children to stringed instruments, we use books and methods in other languages (in English, German or French), possibly because we have little material in Spanish and Catalan. I thought it might be useful to make a book with songs known to our students, with the conviction that when they play the songs they have sung, learning is much faster and rewarding.
They are arranged in order of difficulty, taking into account the fingering, the tonalities, the arcades, the dynamics ..., so that it can be used as a method or as a complement to the method. In this way, rather than proposing a systematic method, we would like to offer a book that contrabass teachers and students can use, adapting it to their needs.
The selection of songs is based on my musical baggage, many of them by oral transmission, starting with elementary school, and ending with the choral world. They are songs very close to me and I would like that double bass players from other areas also know their beauty. Most are traditional Catalan, including the entire linguistic field, but there are also some from the Castilian linguistic area, as well as traditional songs from other European countries.
They are written in tones appropriate to the contrabass and taking into account the degree of difficulty. Some have piano accompaniment (Π), others are written for two or three basses, others in the form of a canon ... which allows you to play these pieces in a group, doing a camera work at an elementary level, and also play the songs in public, at concerts that are held for parents and other students.
The fact of being a single book designed for the first four courses allows teachers and students to follow their own pace and move according to the needs of each new bassist.
I would like to thank my first double bass master, Josep Rius, for his patience and his ability to love life and music, which he infected me from the beginning. Also, Master Ferran Sala, who guided me during all my years of studies and who has been for me as a musical father. Thanks also to Maestro Francesco Petrachi, who made me discover the double bass dimension at a soloist and international level.
