Scherzando

How to learn to play the piano through games, experimentation, trial and error and creativity.

Learning to play the piano has never been so exciting!  This book was created to begin piano study using original music in varied styles that evokes exotic lands, presents entertaining images and uses all types of music—not just only reading music but also improvising, imitating and working together in groups.

Beautifully illustrated and including audio recordings, this collection has a clear and easy to follow format that introduces the fundamentals of piano playing (fingering, notes, dynamic indications, hand positions, etc.) and at the same time captures and stimulates the student’s imagination.  A card game is included to add a different dynamic to the lessons.

The second volume of the collection Scherzando the student will concentrate on learning tonalities, improvisation with chords as well as continuing to develop the techniques and ideas presented in the first volume.  All of the original music, which was composed by the author of this collection, is written using varied styles evoking exotic landscapes and all kinds of enjoyable activities.  Not only will the student work on music reading but also improvisation and playing in groups.

The Italian word «Scherzo» means “game”.  The author used the title, Scherzando to convey his concept of learning to play an instrument through games, experimentation and creativity as well as trial and error.  All of those are part of this fantastic musical journey that you are about to begin.

Joan Alfaras

The Author
«I wrote this book based on a personal challenge which I first began with Stradivari: to give instrumental students material that will motivate them and at the same time develop a thorough command of the instrument.  One of the most attractive features of the book, at least in my opinion, is the variety of musical styles included.  The diversity of music includes modern styles as well as others that are more classic.  In addition, jazz, folk music, character pieces and others with special effects are all found in this method.  The method includes a CD with recordings of each piece, which are also available online.

I hope that this book provides you with the opportunity to experience the pleasure of making music as you develop in piano playing.  Enjoy!».

The Illustrator
«It has been a pleasure for me to create the illustrations for this book.  From the first moment that the author asked me to collaborate I have been completely motivated by this project. The variety of scenes that the music by Joan Alfaras evoke allowed me to create an imaginary world filled with images from different lands, eras, people and places.

I hope that my illustrations will spark the imagination of the girls and boys who will use this book».

Jordi Flaquer

Editorial Boileau
«Based on my experience as a pianist and teacher, I believe that Scherzando is an innovative method that presents all of the multiple aspects of the piano both in terms of styles and pedagogical aspects.

It is an open door inviting the student to develop their artistic sensibilities from the very beginning and also provides a solid foundation which is, at the same time, totally delightful for the student».
