Virtus Op. 53 for flute, violin, viola, cello and piano was written in the Fall of 1990, commissioned by the Northwest Chamber Players of Portland, Oregon. The piece is based on the virtues division of Plato. Virtue is the middle point between two extremes, and the truly virtuous man will integrate the three main virtues (Prudence, Fortitude and Temperance) to reach the Justice, the ultimate virtue that combines the first three.
This is the original version of the piece. Immediately after the premiere, the composer felt Virtus could become an also successful piece for orchestra and a new version for full symphony orchestra was written. In that later form Virtus was awarded by the «Reina Sofia» Prize in October 1991 and performed by the RTVE Orchestra conducted by Sergiu Comissiona.
