Variaciones y Fantasía sobre un tema de Salvador Pueyo was composed in the spring of 2000, commissioned by the Spanish guitarist Sergi Vicente. The work is dedicated to my first composition teacher, the Catalan composer Maestro Salvador Pueyo, who was my guide in my first attempts at this difficult artistic discipline.
In an unusual duet, the work shows both instruments in a balanced balance of sound and prominence. The main theme belongs to the first Sonata for piano by Maestro Salvador Pueyo, a work dated 1961. It is specifically the second theme or idea 'B' of this piece, with a clear dodecaphonic construction. After the presentation of the theme by both performers, a total of four sharply contrasting variations follow. The Fantasia, which comes later, functions as a development of all the ideas presented previously, both theme and variations, leading up to an intense return of the original theme which concludes the work.
Variations and Fantasia on a theme by Salvador Pueyo was selected to be premiered at the International Youth Music Forum in Kiev, Ukraine, on 13 May 2000.
