The music for The General Steam Suite for string orchestra has its origins in the soundtrack I wrote for the screening of the great silent film classic, The General, directed by and starring Buster Keaton, one of the greatest comedians of the 20th century.
When composing the music, I wanted to recreate the atmosphere of old movie theatres in which screenings of silent films were accompanied by a pianist or an ensemble of musicians. Although all the music for the film is written, I tried to preserve the feeling of improvisation and simultaneous reaction to the images and emotions of Keaton’s black and white masterpiece.
To create the right atmosphere, I wanted to give the musical language an old-fashioned, almost naïve and romantic feel, as it seemed appropriate to capture the atmosphere of the old silent movie theatres. The movements of The General Steam Suite correspond to the film sequences, but are organised and developed according to purely musical criteria.
Because of the character of the composition, it is possible and advisable to use some element of staging at the convenience and will of the performers. The final part can be sung by the same members of the orchestra a capella the first time and accompanied by the instruments in the second repetition. At least the last “Hei” must be sung and played standing.
