This Sonatina was composed in the summer of 1953 and won the Composition Prize of the American Conservatory of Fontainebleau, which was directed by my teacher, Nadia Boulanger. It was premiered that same summer by Jean Pasquier, whom I had the honour of accompanying at the piano. The first movement is modelled on the first movement of Mozart's Sonata in F major for violin and piano. The second movement is the transcription for violin of the 4th song of my cycle of melodies on poems by Joan Maragall, Diades d'amor. I would like to thank my good friend and excellent violinist, Marie-Christine Millière, for her revision of the bow strokes and fingering which respond perfectly to the character of this work.
