Although the date on which the Sonatina was composed is unknown, the academicism which permeates the work suggests that it probably started off as a composition exercise undertaken by the young Ricard Lamote de Grignon under the strict supervision of his father, Joan Lamote de Grignon, under whom he studied. The first movement evokes Scarlatti’s and Antonio Soler’s harpsichord sonatas. The second is reminiscent of a two-part sarabande close to J.S. Bach’s  keyboard works, and the third takes the stricter form of a two-part fugue.

Despite its apparent lightness and insignificance, Ricard Lamote de Grignon must have been sufficiently attached to this Sonatina to perform it at the legendary – and only – concert given by the CIC (Independent Composers of Catalonia) group in Barcelona on 25th June 1931.

I. Allegro
