THE MATERIALS HAVE TO BE HIRED
This symphony only has three sections, but the second and third are interwoven and must therefore be played without a break.
Despite the fact that the initial phrase of the introduction, from which the main theme comes, also appears in the «ostinato» bass of the second section («Passacaglia») and in the odd touch of the third, this piece does not have a cyclic structure. The aforementioned phrase consists of the twelve notes of the chromatic scale, but it is not atonal in the strict meaning of the word, as atonalism is not characteristic of the way this composer works.
The third section is quite similar to rondo form, with some varied «refrains» and highly contrasting «verses».
This composition was written in 1989 and was first performed on 21 and 22 September 2002 at the Teatro Principal in Sabadell and at the Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona, respectively.
