Sardanana is my attempt at creating a music that I hope to be full of suggestion, double meanings, humour, irony and even a certain touch of violence. The composition follows the exact formal construction of a sardana, a Catalan folk dance. The very title is an indication of its rhythm: Sar-da-na-na, da-na-na, da-na-na. As the amusing Catalan saying goes: “tot-són-pops”. I have included every possible stereotype in it and, if pressed, I would say that it is quite a danceable sardana…
The original version of Sardanana –for two pianos– was written in Paris in 1984 and was first performed by Eulalia and Ester Vela at the EPTA Festival in Namur (Belgium) on 24 November 1995. Ten years later, during the summer of 1994 in Bell-Lloc, I transcribed it as literally as possible for piano four hands, and this version was performed at the El Hatillo Festival (Venezuela) on 3 November of that year, by Antonio López and José García Moreno.
