The sardana Sant Martí del Canigó by Pau Casals is one the most famous works in the catalogue of his compositions. It is only somewhat less well known that his very famous Christmas oratorio, El pessebre [The Manger]. The orchestration of both works, done by Enric Casals, reveals the musical talent of both brothers.

Pau Casals composed the work in 1943 in Prada de Conflent, at the base of the Canigó Mountain, which after being immortalized by Verdaguer became a symbol of the Catalan nation. In this sardana, which was inspired by the sounds of the bells of the Monastery from which the title of the work is taken, Casals wanted to express his nostalgia during his exile.

Later on, this work was incorporated into a larger compositon for the stage, El misteri del Sant [The Mystery of the Saint]. It was dedicated to his God-Daughter, Maria de la Pau Tortelier, daughter of the cellist Paul Tortelier.

There are various arrangements of this sardana based on the original version for piano solo: for cobla, chamber orchestra and symphonic orchestra.
