The sardana Sant Martí del Canigó by Pau Casals is one of the most famous works in his compositional corpus, after his well-known oratorio on Christmas themes, El pessebre. The orchestration of both works, under the care of Enric Casals, is evidence of the musical talent that characterised the two brothers.

Pau Casals composed it in 1943 in Prada de Conflent at the foot of the Canigó mountain, which had been the symbol of the Catalan nation since Jacint Verdaguer. With the Sardana, inspired by the ringing of the bells of the monastery that gives the work its title, Casals intended to express his longing in exile.

This work was later integrated into a larger, more scenic work entitled El misteri del Sant [The Mystery of the Saint]. It was dedicated to his goddaughter María de la Paz Tortelier, daughter of the cellist Paul Tortelier.

There are several instrumentations of this Sardana: for solo piano - which is the original composition -, for cobla, for chamber orchestra and for symphony orchestra. The materials in this version are for chamber orchestra.
