In 2001 the Academia Marshall celebrated its centenary. As part of the celebration a concert series was presented in which I was invited to perform the Quintet in G minor and the Trio in C Major by Enrique Granados. In addition other musicians from the Academia, including the violinist Ala Voronkov and members of the Glinka Quartet, performed other chamber music works by Granados.

In order to perform these works it was necessary to prepare new editions of the scores based on the original sources. Together we studied the pieces directly from the available manuscripts. Immediately we were able to see that these were little known works, in part because some of them were incomplete and also since the sources were found in various archives, such as the National Library of Catalonia, the Barcelona Music Museum, the Center of Musical Documentation of the Generalitat of Catalonia and the Academia Marshall.

The Romanza for String Quartet is a one of the surprises within the chamber music works of Granados. Little is known about the work other than what the music itself tell us: the harmonic language is more complex than that of the Trio and Quintet. In addition, Granados uses thematic material based on the initial motive which is developed in counterpoint throughout the piece. This all seems to indicate that this work was written later than the two previously and better known works. In the manuscript of this Romanza there are sketches for the first measures of a funeral march. These might indicate that the Romanza was intended to be the first movement of a string quartet which was never completed. Nevertheless, the work is solid in and of itself.

This piece was recorded by the Glinka Quartet for Columna Música (ICM0082) in a performance faithful to the original sources.
