THE MATERIALS HAVE TO BE HIRED
This piece was written during the winter of 1998, and it was commissioned by the Fundación Juan de Borbón to be premiered in the cycle of concerts «Verano Musical de Segovia». The Poemes de rem i vela (Poems of oar and sail) for string orchestra is comprised of four short pieces each inspired by poems of J.M. Sagarra from his book Cançons de rem i vela (Songs of oar and sail).
Sagarra wrote these poems in Port de la Selva, where he spent long seasons talking with the fishermen and observing the village life. Through his verses, we can feel the smell of the loved Mediterranean Sea, we can see the arid scenery typical of a country affected by the Northern wind, and we are touched by the people’s feelings and their lives in this paradisiacal place in the North of the Costa Brava which opens the Peninsula of the Creus Cape.
The language chosen to evoke this entire world is eclectic always following the general descriptive content of the poems. In order to achieve the scent form Ampurdà, I have chosen three catalan popular songs in three of the pieces.
