The Piano Quartet in E op. 48 «A celebration of living» was a commission from Mrs. Emily Baines for a present to her stepmother Mary Winch celebrating her spirit of life, health and joy of living. The piece was written during the summer of 1988 and was finished in Portland (Oregon) at the beginning of October. I tried to depict in the music the diverse personality of Mrs. Winch keeping in general an undramatic mood and basically featuring a pure and pleasant side of life. The first and last movements share the same spirit: kind, serene and also happy and expensive, the melodies flow with facility and the textures are basically transparent although the writing is often highly contrapuntal. The second and middle movements offer the contrasting side of the piece. It presents a deeper inside and texturally offers a long ascending gradation. The viola states monodically a meditative melody. The violin joins the viola in a duo and later the cello enters with the same theme in augmentation. A gentle but deeply felt trio grows in intensity and culminates with the piano entrance with the principal theme in four octaves. The piano in the upper register drops the tension suddenly dying the movement with a remembrance of the theme head by the string instruments one after the other. There is no break between this movement and the last one, and the piece ends with joy, expansiveness and optimism.
