Often the teaching of musical language has been proposed exclusively as a support for instrumental teaching. Consequently, efforts have been devoted only to exercise the student in the solfeggio and, in a secondary way, to develop his ear, two essential but insufficient aspects in the formation of a musician. The teaching must go beyond and must provide the student with the tools and resources necessary to help him understand the music he reads, interprets or listens to and that facilitate him to be able to express himself through this language, two aspects that I believe are basic, both if what he wants is to become a good interpreter such as dedicating himself to composition, teaching ... or, simply, being a good amateur musician. This implies, necessarily, that the student must also learn other aspects of language, formal, harmonic, stylistic ... and must be able to relate to each other and fully integrate their musical baggage.

It has been my will to provide students and teachers with material with which to work all these aspects, with a variety of exercises and without saving the necessary theoretical explanations. Often the teacher, aware of the need to expand the content of traditional teaching, has to resort to books and materials very diverse and heterogeneous, even difficult to find in some areas (harmony, analysis, history, hearing ...). All these contents have been included here, so you can dispense with other complementary materials, although occasionally they can be useful.

In order to progressively work on the different subjects, I have structured the book into eight units, each divided into nine sections:

reading
intonation
repertoire
theory
harmony
analysis
creativity
History and Hearing
dictation
The way to work these sections is exposed in the study guide, I recommend reading carefully to make the most of the contents of the book, summarized in Appendix B. The units are balanced, so the time devoted to each should be r similar. Orientatively, I propose an approximate dedication of four weeks per unit.

The book includes a CD containing the dictations and auditions in the Audio system and the lessons of solfege in the Midi-File system. There is information about the contents of this CD in the paragraphs of the Study Guide dedicated to Hearing, Dictation and Intonation and in Appendix A.

I have added reference indices at the end of the book (Appendices C and D) that will help you quickly find any of the musical fragments, terms and concepts worked on throughout the course. The piano accompaniments of the intoned lessons and the solutions of the exercises are published in a separate book that will be very useful for self-taught students.

It has been my desire to make a useful book that contributes to the formation not only of the future professional musician but also of the amateur, who will acquire some knowledge that will help him to enjoy even more the music.

I want to thank the Boileau publishing house for the trust placed in my work since the beginning. Also, I want to say that the effort that this book has made would not have been possible without the constant help of my wife Montse. She and our daughter Laura are dedicated to this book.
