Victoria Kamhi tells in her memoir "From the hand of Joaquín Rodrigo":
"At the beginning of June, 1969, we had the visit of Dr. Isao Takahashi, promoter of the classical guitar in Japan, and eminent eye doctor. He had worked eight years in Lambarene next to Dr. Albert Schweitzer, and had an extensive culture. Since our first meeting we were joined by an intimate friendship. On this trip I was accompanied by his wife Take, a lovely person. We talked for a while about some things and others. As the door leading to the terrace of our attic was open, we could see a multitude of swifts that fluttered incessantly, throwing their joyful screams.
What a beauty! ”Mrs. Take exclaimed in wonder.
"Why doesn't Maestro Rodrigo write a work that reflects the flight of these cute little birds, a symbol of spring?"
"Nothing easier," Joaquin replied, smiling. "It will be a piece for guitar and will be dedicated to you." "Magnificent! Then, the world premiere will take place in Tokyo, and for this reason we invite you to visit our country. ”
Joaquin kept his promise, and three years later he sent his new work Spring Birds, dedicated to Mrs. Take, to Tokyo. But she was already very sick, because she suffered from incurable cancer. It was on his hospital bed where he heard the play, performed by a friend guitarist, on the eve of his death.
Dr. Takahashi also kept his word, and at his initiative, we were both hired by businessman Tetsuyi Matsuoka to make a concert tour of Japan. When we listened, in each concert, this inspired work performed by guitarist Christopher Parkening, our heart was filled with sadness. ”
