The main reference points for the three pieces that make up Ofrenda (Offering), subtitled Tres danzas españolas (Three Spanish dances), can be found in the Andalusian folk music that was developed on by Manuel de Falla or Isaac Albéniz. Homage is paid to Albéniz in particular at the end of the second piece of Ofrenda, with a subtle but clear reference to Evocación (Evocation), the first piece in his famous Iberia suite. Written in 1942 and subsequently orchestrated by the composer himself, Ofrenda takes in several popular Andalusian rhythms (fandango, zapateado, farruca) whilst also paying homage to cante jondo, a tradition style of flamenco singing. All of this is achieved in a very effective, brilliant style of piano composition.
