El Momento musical was written in the winter of 2000, in response to a kind request from the clarinetist Josep Sancho, to whom the work is dedicated. Its premiere took place at the Auditori Enric Granados in Lleida on 2 February 2001, by the aforementioned instrumentalist and Pilar López-Carrasco on piano, who included it in their repertoire during the tour of Poland and Canada held in April of the same year.
The piece is in a single movement and comprises several sections that contrast in tempo and character, as well as in the performances demanded of the performers, who reach remarkable virtuosity in the live tempi. Thus, passages with a scherzando profile and close to the character of a cadenza coexist with others of a more lyrical and intimate nature and with a broad cantabile line, revealing the wealth of technical and expressive resources of the solo instrument. The piano participates fully, with its precious and highly elaborated writing, in the discursive flow, in constant dialogue with the clarinet.
The Momento musical, lasting less than six minutes, is the composer's second contribution to this instrumental combination, after Poema (1993/1996). Both pieces constitute a diptych that can be performed together, in which case the succession Poema-Momento musical should be respected.
