Lírica Catalana is an emblematic work for voice and orchestra by the Catalan composer of the 20th century, Manuel Blancafort, written between 1920 and 1922. This cycle of songs, originally composed for soprano and piano, represents a milestone in the orchestral and lyrical language of the master of La Garriga.

With lyrics by renowned poets such as Josep Ma. López-Picó, Rossend Llates and Tomàs Garcés, Lírica Catalana captures the essence of Catalan culture through five musical poems. From hope and admiration to melancholy and contemplation, each song offers a unique vision of the emotions and landscapes of Catalonia.

The cycle begins with “Advent” which, as the title explains, describes a winter landscape in a Christmas image. The second song “Comiat” is a lament about the passage of time and the oblivion that it entails. Then comes “L'infinit” in which poet and composer lament the uncertainty they call “The evil of infinity”. The fourth describes a spring landscape combined with bells, the Palau bells, which are not known who touches them: it is the most popular in the cycle. Finally, the cycle ends with “L'hora de l'alba” in which an Allegro assai is combined with more playful moments.

L’aire del Montseny is a work for soprano and chamber orchestra (flute, oboe, clarinet and strings) based on the homonymous poem by Mossèn Pere Ribot. The work also exists in a version for voice and piano.

This published version was premiered on June 18, 1961 in Riells del Montseny in the closing concert of the Cinc Audicions de Primavera cycle of the Chamber Orchestra Solistes de Barcelona with the mezzo-soprano Anna Ricci as soloist under the direction of Domènec Ponsa.

Ribot’s text, who in addition to being a poet was also a priest, comes from his relationship with Montseny, since he was the parish priest of San Martín de Riells del Montseny, one of the first homes of Catalanism, from 1941. Some of his poems have been set to music by other composers such as Joan-Baptista Rebull y Lluís, Eduard Toldrà, Josep Monné, Antoni Pérez y Simó, Frederic Mompou, as well as Manuel Blancafort.
