THE MATERIALS HAVE TO BE HIRED
The symphonic poem Les càrregues [The Burdens] is structured in three large sections and has two main themes. Finding the themes was instinctive: a touching subject and another terrifying one. The three parts of the work are connected, there is no pause.
The work begins with a "Nocturno" where the clarinet softly sings the theme of El testament d'Amèlia. Meanwhile, the string plays pianissimo. Shortly after the song comes from the flutes and music begins to unfold a climate of announcing mystery: the tremolo of the string tells us that something is approaching. It was just a warning that the second theme will appear, presented with a false calm and that later will become a fateful motive. It is still dark and it rains moderately. I use a bell that repeats five times the note Mi to indicate that it is five o'clock in the morning. Everything is still and the feeling is pleasant. The string section puts an end to this first part with a long La. Follow the second part that is the most violent. It is a "furious Allegro" in which I introduce the outrageous subject in a blatant manner. Then the instrumentation is full of contrasts and the instruments alternate with each other. It's time to load. There is a great confusion, but it will diminish until it reaches calm. We enter the last section.
A cadential passage leads us to the final part. The melody of El testament d'Amèlia appears with all its beauty. It is a sad song, very sad, that little by little ascends to the acute register, wishing to disappear in a climate of peace.
