The sardana La Verge de Palau-solità was composed by Manuel Blancafort during the Christmas season of 1978. Compared to Sardana simfònica [Symphonic Sardana] this sardana has a markedly traditional and dance-like character.
The curts [short steps] of this sardana are based on the traditional Catalan melody La mare de Déu quan n’era xiqueta [When the Mother of God was a Girl] which extols the Virgin in her youth. Blancafort had already used this melody in two of his other works: Concierto, No. 1 «Omaggio a Franz Liszt» [Homage to Franz Liszt] for piano and orchestra and as well in his Rapsodia catalana [Catalan Rhapsody] for cello and orchestra.
The llargs [long steps] use the music of Gozos de Santa María de Palau-solità which was written by Mn. Adjutori Vilalta (1908- 1978), Rector of Santa Eugènia del Congost, located in the municipality of Tagamanent de Puiggraciós. The manuscript of the work contains the dedication: «Dedico este trabajo al amigo Dr. Lluis Sistach i Roura» [I dedicate this work to my friend Dr. Lluis Sistach i Roura].
This edition of the version for piano solo, written by the composer, has been adapted and revised by pianist Antoni Besses.
