My friend José Manuel Gil commissioned me a new work to premiere it on his tours. It was a pleasure to write it, as I have long held him in high regard as a violinist and conductor of Concerto Malaga. I chose to write a concerto in three movements entitled La Maroma, a place to which I have always felt attracted. Music and nature always go together.
This concerto consists of three movements and obeys a form similar to that of the Italian Baroque concertos: two fast movements framing a slow one. The first, «Allegro», begins energetically and then gives way to the fun and festive mood of the soloist. Then comes the second movement, «Lento», which is both somber and mystical at the same time. This second movement is like a romantic reverie. In the third, a «Presto» again at a fast tempo and in ternary compass, the structure is more varied. Towards the end there is a cadenza by the soloist and a very special retention inspired by Kreutzer’s Etude No. 30 that ends brilliantly.
The work, of course, is dedicated to José Manuel Gil de Gálvez Leader.
