The catalogue of works by Benguerel is very extensive. One of the constant features in his music is his ability to dialogue with the performer, a characteristic present in the Classical, Romantic and more recent times.
Kiev is Benguerel's second violin concerto, a collaboration with the violinist Ala Voronkova -who premiered it- which has been really fruitful from the technical point of view, given the interpreter's ability to accept challenges in this field. Hence, the name of the concert: Kiev, city of birth of the violinist.
It is a very well constructed score, with a careful balance between the tutti and the soloist, and I imagine that it pleases the performer, with technical difficulties of virtuosity, but that never tarnishes the musicality of the passages. In this sense, Benguerel's writing is formally developed by small changing episodes, constituted in themselves with a dramatic structure that leads to a denouement, and that confers a particular dynamism to each movement. Years ago, the author said of the evolution of his work: "A constant invention of the form most appropriate to his spirit". The three movements of which it is composed formally follow many features of the classical concerto, and with the current freedom, they structure a discourse very pleasing to the ear.
