During a many months of 2016 the death of my friend and colleague David Padrós (Igualada 1942- Barcelona 2016) was an intense blow in my life. Even today as I write this in October, 2016, our friendship, which began long ago, remains very present to me.

Within the panorama of Catalan music in the 20th Century and the first 16 years of the 21st Century, David Padrós was a composer who was totally identified with the most authentic musical vanguard. Not a vanguard clamoring for attention with superficial effects but one that has deep roots in musical renovation, as I understand it. The vanguard I am referring to first appeared in the 20th Century and presented such profuse innovations that it often appeared chaotic and incomprehensible.

David Padrós never fell into banality or cheap effects; rather he followed a path that was extraordinarily coherent with his ideas and principals. His music is neither simple to listen to nor to perform. Nevertheless, this same phenomenon has remained constant throughout different periods of musical history. He was fascinated by the Orient and several of his works were influenced by that world as well as by the most notable French composers of the past century.

David Padrós paid a high price for his valor and creative honesty. His works should have been better known and valued by those who program music. Those individuals are almost always rooted in the past and very little in the present and I am certain that they knew practically none of his works.

I remember very clearly our conversations in the restaurant Bilbao in Barcelona, where we met regularly during a long period of time.

In memoriam David Padrós  is my small homage filled with love for a person of worth. I now realize that sooner or later his works will find the respect that they deserve. That would be the best homage that David could have and I wish he would have known that.

Rest in Peace, dear friend.
