In a cool mood is a trio for a typical Jazz ensemble: piano, clarinet and bass. The work was inspired by New York City and was composed immediately following a trip to that city. It has three movements,
fast—tranquil—fast, in which I wanted the instruments to shine and to have freedom of expression.
Each movement reflects a particular image of life in New York. The first movement, titled Downtown, A Busy Day is both very busy and stubborn, with various themes that are interwoven. The second movement, A Talk at the Café, written in 3/4 is quite optimistic, and highlights the clarinet. The last movement, At Work, is the most virtuosic of the three. It begins with a fugato in the bass which is contrasted by the verticality of the chords in the piano and the theme which the clarinet varies. After a brief development and a recapitulation, In a cool mood concludes with a brilliant coda.
The work is perhaps influenced by Jazz and at the same time by the writing and counterpoint of Bach, which are woven together. Certain passages should be performed with swing, which this type of music needs, as well as a strong rhythm, but with apparent liberty. The work is dedicated to the pianist Mariana Gurkova.
