The Trio Il mattino (2017) is the version for clarinet, viola and piano of the original version for violin, cello and piano called Trio «Le Matin» composed between July and August, 2009. The title refers primarily to the first movement, Espressivo, which appears to float in the air without rhythm. This movement is delicate and almost silent, with a certain Impressionist quality. Espressivo begins with arabesque-like figurations in the piano which are in contrast to the generally serious and melodic character of the movement.

The following movement is a Scherzo in 6/8. Staccato and legato triplets alternate between sections which are subtle and others which are molto marcato. There are also mysterious moments which contrast with the other sections. The movement concludes with a morendo during which the triplets disappear.

The Meditativo which follows is a long and contained reflection between the three instruments. The harmonies are clear and the strings sing a melody which is almost painful. Suddenly the music becomes dramatic and this strong emotion is drastically interrupted by a return to the opening mood.

The final movement, Allegro ostinato, is the longest and most varied of the four movements. It opens with music which is similar to an étude, something frequently found in my works. There are constant changes in harmony. Especially notable are two episodes that slow down the rapid rhythm. For the piano there are two mysterious moments during which the same note is repeated slowly and loudly. Gradually the fast tempo returns and the conclusion is energetic and virtuostic.
