Hymn to the United Nations is a work for wind orchestra on a text by W. H. Auden. There is also a version for choir and orchestra and another for choir and piano. Dated in 1971, at the age of 95 and two years before his death, it was commissioned by the United Nations, at that time directed by the Burmese U Thant (1909-1974), fourth secretary general of the institution. The 8-page manuscript, in the version for choir and piano, is in the key of C major and 2/4 time signature "San Juan Puerto Rico September 27 1971". It is a brilliant work of grandiose character both for the vocal treatment and, above all, for the instrumental, with effects that give it the qualities of a hymn of an emblematic institution. Wystan Hugh Auden (1907-1973) was a celebrated English poet, naturalized American after World War II, who excelled both in poetry and in essays on contemporary writers. Thus, the hymn featured two of the most relevant personalities of the time, who curiously died in the same year.
