Femina Feminae was born from a visit to the exhibition with the same name at the Thyssen Museum in Andorra, in the summer of 2019.
This exhibition focused on three centuries of painting history through the female figure. Similarly, these musical pieces focus either on some of these paintings of feminine inspiration or on other paintings created by women (highlighting the extraordinary Berthe Morisot and Remedios Varo), and in a world of emotions and stories that are born from each piece. My own collection of paintings was completed by the suggestions made by Nuria Vidal or Martin Samper.
Eight pieces about eight paintings that, at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, were merely isolated drafts for piano. However, with the arrival of the lockdown, and motivated by the creative flow that Albert Guinovart, a composer to whom I feel very close, showed on social media, I began developing this series of pieces more in depth.
I had the feeling that the piano sounded incomplete, and I quickly felt the need to bring another instrument on board. Luckily, the only instrumentalist with whom I could collaborate was the clarinetist Marta Urzaiz. We worked hand in hand from March to June, in a constant process of writing, editing, testing and revising until coming up with the final version of each piece. We considered every legato together, every breathing or articulation possible. I also relied on the revision and opinion of musicians such as Bartolomé García-Plata (clarinet), Joan Ramón Company (piano), Armando Merino (conductor) or Albert Mañosa (editor). Finally, the maestro Jordi Mora suggested some important comments with regards to the writing and with that I concluded the creative process.
It was impossible not to recall “Pictures at an Exhibition” by Mussorgsky. The difference, though, is that here there is no “Promenade” as a thread. The continuity in this work is reflected in the degree of depth with which I try to navigate through each painting. While the first piece, “Reclining Nude Shepherdess” is a contemplation of the overflowing beauty of a simple yet elegant feminine silhouette, and “Dídac and Núria” is a straightforward and tender tribute to maternity, the last two pieces, “The Murderess” and “The Dream”, suggest that we immerse ourselves completely inside both scenes to live and understand each corner of the painting, as well as all of the complexity that can be hidden beyond the apparent obviousness of the first impression.
Placing this work and its story on record encouraged me to present the pieces to a music publishing house for the first time in my life. I want to thank Yolanda Guasch for the attention and care with which she received this work in BOILEAU. This edition, for me, is a URTEXT, since it is more complete and elaborate than the manuscript itself.
