In these three pieces for piano for four hands entitled Estructures, I wanted to be faithful to the spirit of expressivity suggested by the plastic creations of Kandinsky, Mondrian and Theo Van Doesburg. Thus in Structure I (Homage to Kandinsky) the rapid figurations and incisive rhythm allude to the cosmic conglomeration suggested to me by some of the paintings of the brilliant Russian painter. In Structure 2, dedicated to Mondrian, the rationalist peace of idyllic stillness and harmony are expressed in a slow tempo of long textures. At the end, repeated octaves (the octave as a symbol of cosmic unity) allude to inner, serene and mystical peace. After the turmoil and restlessness comes a haven. By this I wanted to express that spiritual peace is only achieved after an intense inner struggle. Finally the octaves are diluted in emptiness, in a pianissimo that ends in silence, in that Quasi niente expressed in the score. For its part, Structure 3 is intended as a tribute to Theo Van Doesburg and his rationalist art that aspires to a utopian humanity that is at once restless and balanced.

In any case, in Estructures, the approach to the impressions suggested by the paintings is intuitive, even if it follows a very elaborate formal approach. In fact, the three pieces form a sonata form with two fast movements at the end and a slower central movement. Estructures is dedicated to Mireia Fornells and Joan Miquel Hernández, two excellent pianists and friends who premiered them at the Setmana de Música de Girona in September 2003.
