Although it was not definitively completed until 1931, there are sketches for this work dating before 1920. Nevertheless, since there is some confusion in the manuscripts of the main body of the first part, L’Ermita [The Hermit], I have added certain passages with the goal of giving cohesion to the work.
This is a typical and magnificent example of the symbiotic relationship for Manuel Blancafort between piano music and orchestral music. He frequently composed at the piano and used the distinctive and varied sonorities of the instrument as the basis for his orchestral instrumentation. Without question, in his piano works the unique sounds of the instrument are perfectly presented and gave rise to his masterful “adaptions” for orchestra using the infinite sonic kaleidoscope that an orchestral version offers.
As so often happens in the music of this Catalan composer, we find in The Hermit a more elaborated version of the work Cançó en l’ermita [Song of the Hermit], which belongs to a collection of songs. The archaic, bucolic and highly lyrical character that fills these pages makes a splendid prelude to the second part of the work, The Panorama. Although completely unified with the first part, the atmosphere of the second part is thoroughly startling and, at the same time, perfectly complements the first section. The second part is filled with overwhelming happiness and with passages that alter between those that are shining and others that are delicate with special transparency. In any case, it is a jewel among piano works of the Twentieth Century.
