Entre deux is a friendly and fun piece with no aesthetic concerns. I have other scores of such nature. The viola and the cello each play the part of a character: Aida Carmen and Romain. They laugh, they argue, they chase each other, they love each other and so on.
The work is structured in four short movements: Scherzando, Andante amoroso, Intermezzo and Allegro molto. The first and fourth show similar characteristics in terms of rhythm: both are fast-paced and playful. The humorous touch of the “Scherzando” is characterized by a stroke of the bow known as ricochet, combined with short and quick glissandi. The second, the Andante amoroso, is instead an intimate movement in which the two characters fall into a nostalgic lyricism. The Intermezzo is like an innocent joke. Finally, the Allegro molto, the longest one, is like a picaresque chase: now a dialogue, now an argument and so on until, in the end, it all comes to terms.
