El poema de la jungla by Fernando J. Obradors is an orchestral work inspired by the classic book by Rudyard Kipling The Jungle Book.  It was composed in 1938 and that same year was awarded the National Prize of Catalunya.  It was probably originally conceived as a ballet, however there is no record of any performance of the work as a ballet and consequently, it is known as a symphonic suite in three movements(«Lento misterioso-Tempo di marcia», «Andante» and «Maestoso-Allegro»). The second movement is an idyllic nocturne.  The complete work has a duration of some 30 minutes.

This symphonic poem is an important work of Catalan orchestral music and in the catalog of imaginative works by Obradors. It was influenced by Impressionism, perhaps due to the composer's studies in Paris, and it has simple outlines, well-defined melodies, and transparent textures. The final movement is the most notable movement and longest of the three.  It begins with a mysterious poetical atmosphere which gains energy as it develops.  This movement intersperses tranquil and spacious episodes with others that are more agitated, epic passages that contrast with more lyric ones.

Like other great orchestral works composed prior to the Franco era, this work has not been published until the present.  However, the Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria recorded a CD of the work due to the relationship of the composer with the orchestra. However, the manuscript is in very poor condition which necessitated much work in the preparation of this edition of both the score and the orchestral parts.

This is one of the most important works of our symphonic repertoire as much for the delightful instrumentation (curiously, on the final published works by Obradors was a treatise on orchestration) as well as for its aesthetic and historical value.  Since the music is highly descriptive we believe that it could be performed either as an orchestral work, a ballet or with visual support.
