Dos movimientos was written in 1965 and it is my second work in this genre, after Burlesca Ibérica (1963). Dos moviments comprises an «Andante» and an «Allegro-Studio» and my main concern was to bring together the special characteristics of string instruments and the expressive quality of the musical ideas. The «Andante» is built around a bipartite repetition of a statement developed by harmonies which create an almost chiaroscuro nostalgic atmosphere.
The «Allegro-Studio» takes its inspiration from exercises for learners of bow instruments, the exercises designed by the teacher and violinist Otokar Sevcik. It is divided into three sections in which the initial design (the driving force behind the whole movement) is expressed by different moods. The repetition of rhythms in the first section is interrupted in the second part, giving rise to a nostalgic passage which evokes the first movement. After a brief suspensive cadence, it goes back to the main design, which is now more forceful and cheerful. This reflects the piece’s real nature: a study. After this statement, the atmosphere changes suddenly and the music slowly fades out.
Dos movimientos is published by Editorial de Música Boileau and in recorded on compact disc by the German company «Col legno» from a live concert held in 1988 in Leningrad and performed by the Moscow Virtuosi.
