Due to his eagerness to experiment with different instrumental combinations, Oltra tackles the challenge of uniting two quintets from different families, namely strings and woodwind, in this work. He takes advantage of the range of textures provided by both groups and develops a thematic composition that, in his own words, «has no pretense other than that of reflecting the suggestions of my inspiration in the score at all times».
The Doble 5 Suite was composed in 1962 and first performed in 1974 by the Orquesta del Conservatorio Superior Municipal de Música de Barcelona (Orchestra of the Municipal Higher Conservatory of Music of Barcelona) at the Palau de la Música in the same city.
