THE MATERIALS HAVE TO BE HIRED

Voronkov was inspired by the film Liberty (1929) to compose this Divertimento. Three of the five movements relate to specific scenes in that film: 1. «Fresh Crab», 3. «Waltz» and 4. «Changing Clothes» while the other two movements were inspired by the film You’re darn tootin’ (1928) for 2. «Breakfast with Spices» and 5. «Trousers Fugue». The films stared the comic duo of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. The five movement are not intended to explain the story line but rather to highlight certain gags in some of the comic scenes.

«Fresh Crab» takes place outside of a fish monger where a crab is placed in the trousers of the thin man [Stan Laurel] without his knowledge. In «Breakfast with Spices» the two characters attempt to show their sophisticated tastes during breakfast, without much successes. «Waltz »presents the two actors at the top of a skyscraper under construction where they dance while grasping at the beams. «Changing Clothes» is based on scene during which two prisoners have escaped jail and need to change from their prison uniforms to police uniforms so they can continue their escape without out being detected. «Trousers Fugue (or Pants Fugue)» refers to a fight during which the actors attempt to remove the each other’s trousers. In order to describe this scene Voronkov uses a fugue. This musical form allows him to begin with the clarinet (the instrument used to represent the Thin Man [Laurel] and the counterpoint the Fat Man [Hardy]. As the fugue progresses additional voices are added and the music becomes a delightful musical struggle.
