THE MATERIALS HAVE TO BE HIRED
Divertimento 2002 was commissioned by the Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya from Jordi Cervelló in 2002. Its premiere at the Auditori in January 2003, conducted by Hans Graf, was a great success. It is a gentle and light work, structured in six short movements; four of a joyful and amusing character and two of a melancholic nature.
The first, "Allegro burlesco", is festive and jubilant, with percussion enlivened by the colour of the triangle and the xylophone. The second, "Poco Adagio", is a melodic impasse based on a prolonged melody that moves within a distant atmosphere, leading to the "Scherzo". This one, with a certain oriental touch, is developed in dotted triplets, which establish a contrapuntal and playful dialogue. With the fourth, "Misterioso", we return to the distant atmosphere, even more subtle and light, provoked by the muted string. The fifth is an "Intermezzo" in ternary rhythm over a rhythmic ostinato; the four woodwind instruments establish an ironic interplay, which finds colour with the glockenspiel and the plunger flute. The virtuosic and carefree mood returns in the last movement, "Allegro grazioso": two slightly brash and characterful themes form the basis of this movement, in which various rhythmic combinations take place. A cadenza between flute and clarinet leads us to a simple and calm conclusion.
I. Allegro burlesco
II. Poco adagio
III. Scherzo
IV. Misterioso
V. Intermezzo
VI. Allegro grazioso
