The present work of transcription of the 20 songs that make up the cycle "Die Schöne Müllerin" has been carried out on the basis of two ideas that have always seemed to me indispensable: on the one hand, that of being faithful to Schubert's musical proposals and, on the other, that of achieving an operative guitar transcription.

In order to adjust the polyphony to the possibilities of the guitar, I have often been obliged to remove some notes from the chords. In these cases, I have always followed the criterion of respecting the most significant notes of each harmony in order to preserve their solidity, colour and tonal function. The most frequent deletions have been the reinforcing octaves and occasionally some sixths or sevenths. On some occasions I have had to modify the figuration of the bass or the design of some arpeggios and, in those "lieder" whose piano writing clearly exceeded the guitar's possibilities (for example in the song "Die böse Farbe"), I have substituted certain textures for others which, being assumable by the guitar, were as close as possible to the Schubertian ones both in their design and in their musical result. I have also avoided using technical resources of a folkloristic nature (especially certain types of "rasgueados"), so frequent in guitar writing, but absolutely far removed from the aesthetics of this music.

This transcription allows the 20 songs to be performed in their original keys. Given that some of them are not very favourable to the polyphonic expression of the guitar, I have chosen to transpose them to guitar keys and, from there, to recover the original keys by means of the use of the mechanical capo [Ct]. In no case have I chosen to modify the conventional tuning of the guitar (E, B, G, D, A, E) since the time required to make such a modification - between songs - would break the atmosphere of continuity required for the complete performance of the cycle and, furthermore, since the string or strings affected tend to readjust their tension even after the new song has begun, we would find that the tuning would be defective within a few bars.

The dynamics reflected in the score are also those that appear in the original version. I think that given the similarity in sound between the guitar and Schubert's piano-forte, they can very well be used as a faithful reference point for the guitar dynamics, bearing in mind that the better the guitarist's technique, the better the margin of intensity between his "pp" and his "ff" and, consequently, the richer the nuances in between.

Finally, I would like to add that I have tried to achieve an absolutely operative guitar version. My long experience as a concert guitarist has helped me to achieve this. This experience has given me the ability to discern the effectiveness or otherwise of the different patterns of guitar technique according to the musical parameters that coincide with them. Although the level of difficulty of the songs can only be approached from the possession of a very well developed technique, all the guitar passages are designed to obtain a performance that respects the parameters of speed, ductility and sonorous intensity that a performance of the highest artistic level demands.
