One should not expect this collection to provide an infallible method of acquiring a beautiful tone.
This is not a matter that can be treated of theoretically; however, after years of work and reflection, and taking my personal experience as a basis, I have become convinced that a beautiful tone, leaving aside any ideal one may choose to make of it, it is not exclusively dependent on natural physical aptitudes.
Methodical work, intelligently pursued, can bring about important in the lips. The object of the present work is to give the student the means, through methodical exercises, of developing, modifying and transforming his own abilities and at the same time to offer the possibility of attaining a beautiful sonority on the flute.
The work is divided into five parts. The first deals with the timbre and homogeneity of tone in every register.
The second deals with suppleness of tone, especially in the low register.
The third deals with attacking and slurring notes.
The fourth deals with fullness of tone.
The fifth deals with the management of tone in interpretation.
After long hesitation, it seemed to me that the publication of this collection would perform a useful service, since I can affirm that only after long work at the following exercises did I achieve a satisfactory improvement of my embouchure, and that at the present time these exercises still form the basis of my personal work and of my teaching.
