THE MATERIALS HAVE TO BE HIRED
Concert màgic for piano and orchestra was composed on August 1952 by Ricard Lamote de Grignon (1899-1962) for the film of the same name directed by Rafael J. Salvia. The film tells the story of a composer who appears to have been cursed since the various attempts to premiere his concerto are all frustrated by a succession of unfortunate events. Ultimately, the well-known pianist Leopoldo Querol discovers the work, and with great enthusiasm presents the premiere of the concerto with great success. In order to remove the curse on the concerto the original title of the work, Concierto medieval was changed to Concierto mágico.
Without doubt, the climax occurs at the moment when the Orquesta Filarmónica de Barcelona and the soloist Leopoldo Querol (1899-1985) are performing in the emblematic Palau de la Música. In the recording of this scene many figures of the worlds of music, literature and the media as well as dozens of actors were featured. Nevertheless, research has reveled that the work was never premiered apart from the film itself. The soloist Lepoldo Querol described the work in the press of the day as being similar to the Concertstück of Weber or Schumann.
There is a copy of the film in the Filmoteca de Cataluña which allows researchers and specialists to view it. The score, dated 1952 and dedicated to Querol, is preserved in the Fons Ricard Lamote de Grignon at the Biblioteca Nacional de Cataluña.
