Cobla [flbl.2tipls.2tnres.2tpt.1tmb.2fisc.db]

This second volume completes the publication of the versions for cobla of Casals’s Sardanas. Just as was the case with the first volume of the cobla versions of the sardanas, this second volume is complementary to the piano versions of the Sardanas which were, in great part, the original versions of those works.

The research for this edition was done by Josep-Maria Serracant in the archive of the Asociación Músicos por la Cobla [Association of Musicians for the Cobla.] The revision of the scores was completed by Bernat Castillejo and Jesús Ventura for the performance of these works by the Cobla de Cámara de Cataluña [Chamber Cobla of Catalnuya] in the Auditorio Pau Casals at Sant Salvador in El Vendrell during the summer of 2017.

San Martí del Canigó

Without doubt, San Martí del Canigó is the most well-known sardanas by Casals. It was composed in Prades [France] in 1943, the same year as the Sardana in C Major. In a collection of three sardanas orchestrated for symphonic orchestra by Casals’ bother, Enric, this one was cited as being written in exile [Casals left Spain in 1939 and lived in Prades, France until 1956]. The other two sardanas in the collection are Festa Major de Vilafranca (which is also known as the Sardana for cello orchestra) and Sardana sèria [Serious Sardana] (which later became the «Preludio» of the oratorio El pessebre).

Apart from the original version for piano San Martí del Canigó has also be arranged for: cobla, string quartet, string orchestra, cello quartet and symphonic orchestra. Each of these versions were done by Enric Casals.

This sardana is also included in Misteri de San Pere d’Urseol for orchestra and voices based on a text by the poet Josep Sebastià Pons. In the volume of piano works by Casals this was cited simply as “Misteri”.

Festa Major de Vilafranca
(Sardana for cello orchestra)

In 1927 Pau Casals dedicated this work to the London Cello School. Later it was orchestrated by Enric Casals with the title “Festa Major de Vilafranca”. In 2011 Josep Maria Serracant made a transcription of the work for cobla and percussion, dedicated to Juli Grandia who, at that time, was the Manager of the Auditori Pau Casals (Sant Salvador -Vendrell). In July, 2011 it was premiered by the Cobla Mediterrània under the direction of Bernat Castillejo. The transcription maintains the title of the symphonic version: “Festa Major de Vilafranca”.
