In his last creative stage, Valls Gorina was inspired by popular urban music. The French-style cuplés, the carefree and easygoing songs of the cabarets and, at the same time, certain melodic reminiscences of the Havanans of Calella de Palafrugell, a population that he frequented both, would be his clear references in works such as the rogue and sentimental Suite and also in the two songs that we present here.
Cançó de taverna clearly recalls the French waltzes, so popular by the chanson. A very simple melody, ironically decadent in character, fluctuates between minor (in the stanza) and major (in the chorus) and illustrates a beautifully extravagant text by Josep M. de Segarra.
For its part, El barret del prestidigitador is a couplet in the line of double-meaning cabaret songs. It alternates the fox-trot rhythm in the stanza and the waltz rhythm in the chorus, marking two clearly contrasted sections.
