CALIFORNIA 2007 (San Francisco Promenade)
Fantasy-concertante for flute, guitar and orchestra, op. 63
After having heard in San Francisco (USA) my concert for violin, guitar and strings, "Paganini in America", the prestigious jeweler Thomas Hant presented me with specially designed cufflinks. The next day, motivated by the desire to correspond, I wrote a small piece for violin and guitar, evoking some sensations lived after a walk through the streets of the Californian city.
When I returned to Barcelona, I was commissioned to write a work for flute, guitar and orchestra and immediately thought that the work that emerged from that pleasant walk could be the starting point for the composition of the work that I had just requested.
Once again, in this work I use the guitar as the backbone of the whole discursive apparatus: the voices of the flute and the string ensemble emerge from the guitar proposals that give coherence to the set of sections and print their own style disconnected from the one that, traditionally, starts from pianistic schemes.
The tonal conception that dominates much of the discourse of my works, constitutes-at the time of writing for guitar-an added difficulty in the use of idiomatic instrumental motifs. The reason is that the guitar does not allow many of these reasons can develop through different tonal areas.
This has led me, always, to investigate and discover new formulas that, while possessing a harmonic and melodic dimension, had the ability to enhance a logical musical syntax and, in turn, were an alternative to traditional proposals.
I wrote this work in Barcelona during the fall of 2007. It premiered on December 20, 2007 at the Principal Theater of Valls and among other later performances that have been made, I want to mention the Music Festival "Prospectives XXIIè siècle" of Perpignan 2012 where it has been performed - along with three other concerts of mine for guitar and orchestra, under the direction of Daniel Tosi, acting as soloist of the four (Concert for guitar and strings, Concert de Rialp for guitar and symphonic orchestra and Paganini in America for violin, guitar and string orchestra).
