Three centuries ago, J. S. Bach conceived works unsurpassed to this day for their beauty, complexity and knowledge of the expressive and technical possibilities of the cello. With the passage of time, the Six Suites for solo cello have become a landmark in the history of music. The greatest artists of the 20th century have performed them on the greatest stages all over the world. There are countless recordings of immeasurable beauty, which have moved musicians and lay listeners alike. Deservedly established as a cornerstone of the cello repertoire, they ultimately represent the wisdom of the composer. But just as they are an emblem of their composer's mastery, they also represent the most sublime of humanity, which, through their interpretations, has enabled them to live on through the ages.
Due to the great popularity of the work, achieved in part by the famous interpretations of Pau Casals, dozens of editions of the Suites have been published all over the world. The vast majority of them present the composition in its entirety, with or without fingerings, and each with its own arcades. A few of them have an explanatory part where, on the one hand, they give information about its genesis and, on the other hand, try to solve a few technical problems subject to disputes and controversies, due to the lack of an original manuscript. It is surprising that, given the importance of the work for the concert repertoire, these editions do not comment on the most important aspect of these suites, which is the interpretation.
In the present edition we propose to fill this gap. Based on an exhaustive analysis of the sources available to us, this book incorporates a contextualisation of the birth of the works, as well as the instrument for which they were written, into the score. It also includes study aids commenting on the aspects that must be taken into account for their correct interpretation. We have also thought it appropriate to include a brief reflection on the rhetoric of sentiment in the baroque and a comparison of the tempi of different reference recordings. The following work should be of help to young cellists who wish to delve into the beauty of this repertoire, as well as a valuable edition for all those professionals who want to perform it in concert.
